5 OPM Music Videos We Adore

OPM_FEATURED_IMAGE We love home-grown music–Filipinos have always been world-class musicians. But the micro-budgets allotted for music videos result in less-than-stellar (sometimes embarrassingly bad) quality. But once in a while, we come across gems that defy low production values with thoughtful cinematography, framing, and visual poetry. We’ve racked up 5 of these videos to inspire you.

1. Up Dharma Down, “Indak”

The director made an effort to capture movement with framing and set rhythm with editing. We also love that everything is bathed in light.

2. Up Dharma Down, “Luna”

An exercise in film noir, this contrast-y, subject-focused style is as pleasing to the eyes as Armi Millare’s voice.

3. Alessandra De Rossi, “Make it Better”

You didn’t know the actress made music, let alone music videos? Neither did we. Alessandra does not promote her music nor make money from it–she does it for her own enjoyment. And this makes her efforts all the more impressive. Her new-age music call for picturesque, serene visuals. Here’s her take on it:

4. Alessandra de Rossi, “A Melody of Malady”

Another dreamy video.

5. Eraserheads, “Ang Huling El Bimbo”

The video was directed by Auraeus Solito, the award-winning filmmaker who made “Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros.” At the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, El Bimbo won the Asian Viewer’s Choice award. It was written and directed as a short film–each shot is loaded with meaning and emotion. Enjoy.
